WORTHING
Prior to 1845
only the wealthy were able
to afford holidays in Worthing’s Hotels and guest houses ! But he
extension of the rail network to the town later that year opened up the
doors to everyone. Worthing has been popular ever since. It is an ideal
base for touring Sussex and the surrounding country side of southeast
Eng land. Worthing is the largest town in West Sussex, and has a very
mild climate and offers many local activities, all within walking
distance from The Beacons guest house. The town has a large indoor
swimming pool, tenpin bowling alley, an excellent variety of shops and
restaurants (offering cuisine from many continents. There is a large
market on Wednesdays, which is just two minutes walk from the house.
The Dome is one of Britains oldest cinemas, it was almost
derelict in the 70’s but has been fully restored as a venue with
a restaurant/coffee shop and hosts weddings and receptions. The
Connaught Theatre and cinema, Pavilion theatre (on the pier) and
Assembly Halls all provide a great variety of entertainment. The
Assembly Hall boasts a magnificent working Wurlitzer organ, which can
be heard many times a year. Worthing Museum and Art gallery has one of
the largest costume exhibitions in the country , after The Royal
Victoria and Albert in London.
In 2008 Worthing became the new venue for the annual Birdman Event !,
where hopeful aviators in exciting costumes throw themselves off the
end of the end Pier in the hope of making a record breaking flight !
Worthing’s Beach House Park is the home of Bowls England, and the
National Championships are held here every August.
There is so much more to say about Worthing, but why don’t you come and see for yourselves. We can promise you a warm welcome, at our
